Yes, I know hindsight is always 20-20 vision, but here's how I also look at it. The causes of both world wars were more nuanced than what people believe. Yes, it was an act of ethnic arrogance for Franz Ferdinand to visit Sarajevo on June 28, 1914. As Russia and Serbia were allies, the Russians mobilised against Germany, in response to the demands placed on Serbia. The Schlieffen Plan, on paper, looked great, but it involved violating Belgium's neutrality and it wasn't the case that the Kaiser picked up the phone to the Belgians and said, "Oh, look, is it okay if our troops come through to knock out the French mobilising from the West to get back to the Russians?"
The Russians had fought two world wars against Germany, and as such, under Stalin, they wanted a buffer zone. (We mustn't forget that whatever the British thought of Hitler, they saw Nazism as a buffer against communism). The Russians saw themselves as participating in collective security.
Apart from the idiocy of abbott, Australia hasn't been governed too badly.
