Well, one reason that I would suggest as to why Baby Boomers regard the 50s as the greatest time and Gen X the 80s is this, okay, in the 1950s, the USA had emerged from the Second World War victorious, and was involved in the Korean War from 1950 until 1953. Seeing Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham and Henry Winkler as Arthur Fonzarelli romanticised the 1950s, but, the 1950s was the decade, in America, of Disneyland, Mouseketeers, Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson, Buddy Holly, for older teens, heading to the drive-in in your parents' Chevy or Ford, oil was cheap.

By the 80s, most Baby Boomers were heading towards their 40s, raising families, society had become more violent, but their kids, Gen X, were enjoying some of the spoils of technological advances.

The question I ask is, was America ever REALLY great? And my answer is, it depended upon who you were. If you were an African American, it depended upon where you lived. If you were in the South, it wasn't great until the late 1960s.

And what we need to remember is, Cecil Rhodes said, "The sun will never set on the British Empire," yet, former African and Asian colonies of Britain are now independent and the British Empire no longer exists. It is the Commonwealth.

But, the USA has been great since Trump lost the Presidency.
