This is something that people need to remember, too. I remember someone once saying, "When cigarettes weren't harmful." Cigarettes were never safe and many a person who says, "But I eat a healthy diet, I go to the gym several times a week," is shocked when they have a heart attack, and the doctor asks if they smoke and they say yes, and the doctor says, "There's your culprit." Over a century ago, not only were there claims that doctors promoted smoking, but people died, and no apparent cause was found. The link to cancer wasn't discovered until later, and that it wasn't just lung cancer.

The diagnostic criteria for autism has broadened and may have broadened earlier had the US and UK said, "Dr. Asperger, hand over your papers."
