The search for a true friend is elusive. You'll find plenty of people who want to be your friend not because you're a nice person, but because they want to ride in your car, swim in your pool or take advantage of something you have.
I remember my father worked with a man who gave generously to the social club at the company but didn't attend work parties and one day, Dad asked him why. His response was, "I have my colleagues, I have my friends and I have my family. I don't let my colleagues become friends." For some people, seeing such and such a person for two hours once a week is all they need. For some people, they might say, "Okay, that's my friend in that place, that's my friend in that club/group," and there's nothing wrong with that.
