The conservatives love to victim-blame and say that this wasn't an issue until some chose to make it one, but just like Rosa Parkes refused to give up her seat for a white man, saying, "We ain't gonna ride in the back no more," LGBTIQA people have been around for centuries but are now saying, "No, we're not going to live in shadows, anymore."
I had girl playmates when I was a kid, and I remember, when I was in kindergarten, we had a makeshift pool and my teacher asked the girls to let me in because I wanted to have a swim. (It was a muggy cloudy day).
People say, "Oh, let kids be kids," and I say, "Yes, but let trans kids be trans kids, too." As someone who is gender non-conforming, I wish they'd had some of these things when I was a kid. I remember, when I was in Year Six, we had a school camp, and we would have a morning run and I couldn't keep up with some of the other boys, so I was told to join the girls for some aerobic type exercises, which actually suited me better. I did remember a humorous moment on that morning, though, as the lady teacher got us all to put our arms in the air and stretch, and to keep stretching. The lady teacher was wearing a white t-shirt and black shorts and as she kept telling us to stretch and we did, she looked around the semi-circle in which we stood, and remarked, "I can see almost everybody else's belly button." Her shirt had come up, and a few girls said, "We can see yours, too!" She just laughed.
I am now beginning the road to questioning my gender and becoming non-binary, with the view to transitioning, as I have long felt that a lot of what was considered more feminine was more fitting for me.
