One area where I definitely disagree with Dr Mark Hyman and say that healing your gut, so to speak helps your autistic traits is this. If you are gluten intolerant, or coeliac, ingesting gluten can give you abdominal pain, diarrhoea, vomiting, depression, anaemia, and brain fog. So, if you cut gluten out of your diet and you've had brain fog, your mental acuity can improve and so can your ability to hyper-focus. I am fortunate to have a gastroenterologist who understands me and has a great rapport with people on the autism spectrum. When I told her that I am a sex abuse survivor and have a better rapport with women than men, she replied that that's not uncommon for autistic men. My kidney specialist has autistic family members and I have a great rapport with her. In fact, I think she has autistic traits and she gives me a Christmas card every year with a picture of her dog on it. I gave her a card where I wrote something about my cat on it.

My GP is also understanding and I tell her about the things that Professor Tony Attwood says about autistic people.
