My mother emulated much of her father's parenting styles with me. I remember, when I was four, her sitting opposite me at my grandparents' place and hitting me with a wooden spoon if I talked, and I remember having asthma as a four-year-old, and I was overwhelmed by the doctor's cold stethoscope on my chest and it hurt, and my mother hit me for that, too.
