Many people who purport to believe in free speech don't follow the principle of "I disagree with what you say, but I defend to my death your right to say it," but rather, "I want this person's voice amplified because I agree with what they say."

There's an old saying that "No man is a hero to his valet," and someone added "And no man is a hero to the historian for very long either." I think the problem is, without going to the extremes, Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is in all of us. Think about it like this. Say you are the wife of a public male figure, and everybody thinks he's wonderful even if he does do some good, but when he comes home, he's violent and abusive, and you hear how wonderful he is. You want people to know the other side.

Australia's Prince Knighting Nincompoop is an opponent of cancel culture, yet he doesn't want to hear the views of those who deplore him.
