I wish I had been diagnosed when I was younger. Incidentally, the year that Hans Asperger died and his work was uncovered and translated by Professor Lorna Wing was the year I was in Year Two, and my teacher called my mother up to school and told her that I was having trouble with activities such as catching a ball and handwriting. She suggested that I be assessed to see what was wrong. My mother was told that I had muscular dystrophy and wouldn't live to be 12. Well, I'm 47. The downside of being diagnosed younger would have been low expectations from some teachers. I find myself grieving for the childhood I wished I could have had.
