I was fortunate, in one way, in that my birthday is during the summer holidays, so I never had to go to school on my birthday.

I remember, when my brother was in Year One, I was cranky that he woke me up early on his birthday, and my mother said, "It's not his day, today." And I said, "It's his birthday." My mother replied, "Yes, it's birthday, but it's not his day. You could do what you wanted, but he's got to do schoolwork, today."

14 is an awkward age, I remember being there, but I'm pleased that your daughter did have a nice day at school. I know, there were plenty of my colleagues at school, who, if I'd had to school on my birthday, would have wanted a piece of cake and either eaten it, or taken it and thrown it in the bin.
