I tend to think logically, but not without a heart. To give an example, in my native Australia there was a family that was taken into detention because it was claimed that they did not meet the country's protection obligations (the parents came from Sri Lanka, by boat, individually, and married in Australia and had kids. I was furious and disgusted with the language the then home affairs minister used to describe the kids and was also furious with suggestions from him that if the department allowed them to stay the boats would start up again.) and I thought, "Okay, they're wanted and loved by the community where they live and the country's asylum seeker policies are unnecessarily cruel. It's not logical to suggest that allowing someone already here to stay will cause the boats to resume, and you can show some compassion to not just this family, but others who also deserve it.
