I remember, when I was in Year Twelve, in Australia, we had an exchange teacher from Lakeport, California, at my high school (one of our teachers went to Lakeport, as a direct exchange) and the teacher from Lakeport was telling me he was interested in Australia, because it was different. And I told him that I'm interested in Japan and can speak Japanese, and his response was, "You see, that doesn't interest me, at all, because it's so different." I know there's a fair sized Japanese-American community in California, some of whom are third, fourth, or even fifth or sixth generation American, but who have not intermarried with the Latinos, Hispanics, African-Americans or European Americans, and I didn't take him not being interested in Japan or Japanese culture as a racist statement. Just because you're not interested in a particular culture doesn't mean to say you're racist.
