I remember once, when I had to get new shock absorbers fitted to my car and I was talking to the person who fitted them who said that sometimes what people want and what they think they want are two different things. For example, they'll say they want a sports suspension, and they'll go back for a wheel alignment and say, "I'll not happy with it," and they'll ask what's wrong and they'll reply, "It's too soft," or "It's too firm," and the mechanic will reply, "But that's what you asked for."

In this respect, the Autistic Community is like the Deaf Community. Children who have cochlear ear implants fitted on their parents' say so, sometimes remove the adaptor and use sign language, and sometimes, they have the cochlear ear implants removed. Some neurotypical people, either from a bullying perspective or from another perspective, believe that autistic people want to be neurotypical when we don't. Yes, we have our struggles, but that's not the same as saying that we want to be neurotypical, we are saying that we want to be autistic people who have accommodations made for us so that we can use our talents and not struggle. After all, Autism $peaks had to be dragged kicking and screaming to even have autistic people on the Board.
