I remember my father saying that a doctor once said to him that if you wanted to relieve stress get yourself a hobby, but make sure that your hobby didn't become a source of stress. For many people, their hobby is in no way related to their occupation.

I think it's important for people to distinguish between writing as a hobby and writing for a career. If you write as a hobby, think, you might make some extra money from it. If, however, you want to quit what you do to write full-time, you have to be aware that you won't have a consistent regular pay cheque.

And yes, hobbies shouldn't be for the privileged.
