I remember meeting an Australian man who served in New Guinea during the Second World War, and he was surprised to receive the surrender of a Japanese soldier. His reason for surrendering was that he was going to be killed and eaten the next day.

What we need to remember when we talk about the Japanese in the war is, despite cruelty to POWs, such as the Bataan Death March and the Burma-Thai Railway, Japanese officers were harsh on junior soldiers, too.
