I don't see sharing your life with a pet as enslaving an animal. Cats are very territorial, as are dogs, but a cat will typically have affection on its terms. So, if you want to hug a cat and it doesn't want to be held, it will let you know. Those of us who have cats also say that dogs have masters, cats have humans. So, if your cat is hungry, it will let you know.
