I am sorry that you experienced that, and yes, we should give ourselves credit for not being like it. I was terrified of the cane at school and wouldn't want it used on me. Some kids would try to do things to want to see me get it, but I had the last laugh and here's why. I bumped into the deputy principal 17 years after leaving school, and he told me that he hated corporal punishment and only used it because it was expected of him by principals. When he became acting principal, he told the acting deputy principal (a woman) that she could handle the caning from then on. She said to him, "I don't like it any more than you do." So he said, "We won't tell the students, but we won't use the cane while I'm acting principal."
