Here's something that people need to think about when they get up in arms about JK Rowling. I remember, when I was 7, asking my mother if there could be female ambulance officers, and she said no. That was 42 years ago. Then, females started to join the ambulance service and ambulanceman became paramedic. Similarly, policeman gave way to police officer, fireman became firefighter. When I was at university, we were cautioned not to use terms such as male nurse or female lawyer, as it implied that the occupations weren't usually held by that sex, but where that falls apart is, say you need to see a doctor, and you have a preference for a female doctor, but you don't express it, and you make an appointment and a male doctor comes out and calls your name and you say, "No, I don't want you. I want someone else." JK Rowling doesn't appear to have a problem with sentences such as, "Bob Cryer, a senior police officer, at Sun Hill," rather than, "Bob Cryer, a senior policeman, at Sun Hill," but "people who menstruate," well, a 12-year-old girl who menstruates is not a woman, and a transman who hasn't had internal bottom surgery, doesn't identify as a woman.
