As my old high school Deputy Principal used to say, "Everyone has the right to walk around this school without fear of physical, verbal or non-verbal abuse." I didn't have that right.

Ending oppression should not mean that the tables are turned, however, some conservatives see an end to oppression or the granting of equal rights, as themselves becoming victims. In my native Australia, during the Marriage Equality Debate, we saw, from the No side, a mixture of misleading statements, distortions and outright lies. They wanted the Hate Speech provisions to be lifted during the debate. A classic example of a distortion was a school in South Australia was raising money for girls in Africa to be educated and had the idea that boys and girls could come to school in dresses and would donate some money. (I remember, on March 25, 1988, my old high school made it that you could come to school out of uniform, but you had to pay a "fine" of a gold coin to raise money for something for the school). An outright lie, however, was the scaremongering nonsense from conservative former senator Bernardi, who claimed that it would lead to bestiality!

Every time an oppressed group seeks equality, the privileged group whines that they'll lose their privilege.

An intellectual conservative, as you said, will be positive, a reactionary conservative, like the Prince Knighting Nincompoop, Tone the Botty, will oppose anything and everything.
