I am a 47 year old, who was diagnosed as autistic at the age of 35.

I have a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Japanese and History and a Postgraduate Diploma in History. I went to Japan when I was 21, as part of a university trip. I was only there for a week, but I had a great time while I was there, having seen Kawaguchi City, in Saitama, Kawagoe, had a cruise on the Sumida River in Tokyo.

I was bullied quite viciously at school, and some of the bullying was sexual in nature (by other guys, I should add).

I was diagnosed with a few physical ailments, and in 2002, I remember waking up screaming, from a nightmare from an incident at school. I began to have recurring nightmares. On July 1, 2005, I rang Lifeline and the counsellor with whom I spoke, told me that it was my subconscious telling me to deal with it. I made an appointment to see my GP (PCP, in the USA) that afternoon, and a long process of talking about my trauma began. It was to be another five years before I would be diagnosed as autistic. The first person to suspect I may be autistic was, of all people, a hairdresser. She said I was like a little boy whose hair she used to cut who’d tell her about the technical specifications of his father’s new drill or the like.

I was explaining to a newly made friend, who has a Toyota Aurion, that I would be more interested in sorting out what components of it were made in Japan than how fast it can go.
