A saying I heard that I picked up is, "No man is a hero to his valet. And no man remains a hero to the historian for very long." I am not lauding him, but I remember talking to my father half a lifetime ago, and I happened to mention that Woody Allen and Soon-Yi Previn are married but don't live together. I know Woody Allen has been tainted, and at the time, my father said, "Oh, but Woody Allen's not a "normal person." He's an insipid little guy with a wife who used to be his step-daughter." I couldn't help but think, Woody Allen may not be someone to emulate, but if I wanted to get married, I would be happier living separately to my wife. We could each have our own space, and catch up several nights a week. I have found that having to compromise too much can harm your sense of self.
